Turkey is a large country spanning east-west at the north-eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. Western Turkey is bounded by three seas and is the part of Turkey where most of the popular tourist sites are located.
Eastern Turkey is different in many ways to western Turkey both geographically and culturally. Bounded on its eastern and southern borders by five Middle Eastern countries it is not surprising that the people living in this part of Turkey are affected and influenced by their neighbors.
